Fortune Teller Tutorial – How to make a Paper Fortune Teller

A paper fortune teller (also called a cootie catcher, chatterbox, salt cellar, or whirlybird) is a fun origami project for predicting someone’s future. They can be for silly questions like ones the magic 8 ball would answer or just fun fortunes. It’s easy to make one and kids love playing with them.

To make a paper fortune teller start with a standard 8. 5 x 11 inch sheet of paper. Make sure the paper is not too thin or it will tear.

Fold the corners to the middle. Then fold the paper in half. Slide your fingers underneath the squares to operate the fortune teller. Have your friend pick a color and spell it out by opening and closing the fortune teller back and forth with their fingers with each letter called out. Then they can choose a number and count how many times to open and close with their fingers as they say the number out loud. Finally, they can lift the flap for that number to reveal their fortune.

If you are feeling creative, you can even use stickers or markers to decorate your paper fortune teller! Or get really crafty and turn it into a shark, bear, or tiger! You can even try using your imagination to come up with some fun questions or dares that you could write on the inside. It’s a great way to connect with friends this summer and spend some quality time together.
