What States Allow Online Gambling?

Online gambling is legal in most states, although state regulations may differ. It has grown substantially thanks to Supreme Court decisions and sports betting’s success; online casino gambling has also seen rapid expansion despite Federal Wire Act and UIGEA making operating more challenging for some operators in the US.

Florida stands out among states allowing online gambling with two options for bettors: The Seminole Tribe of Florida owning Hard Rock Hotel relaunched their sportsbook after being in legal limbo for two years, and an app operated by Florida state lottery that allows bettors to place bets on NFL, college and other events, but does not permit local bets for in-state college games.

Arkansas and Indiana are currently the only two states with legalized online casino gambling, offering multiple online casinos as they develop their markets. Indiana may experience setbacks that delay its launch date until 2024 or later.

Colorado is one of the most active online betting markets, with several mobile operators (DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM) operating retail sportsbooks across its borders. However, Colorado remains unpopular among bettors due to state law restrictions against statewide mobile sports betting or wagering on in-state college games – something the Oneida Nation plans on changing later this year at its Green Bay casino.

Massachusetts now legalizes online casinos and sportsbooks, but real-money poker and slots remain off-limits. Daily fantasy sports is legal and provides players with an opportunity to win real cash prizes.

Pennsylvania has also welcomed online gambling with open arms and its first legal sportsbooks were established in 2021. Casinos within its borders partnered with DraftKings, FanDuel, and PlaySugarHouse brands to offer sports bets; its low tax rate has made Pennsylvania an appealing market.

Delaware was an early innovator when it launched sports betting in 2013. Today it boasts three live gaming sites: Bally’s Dover, Harrington Raceway and Delaware Park.

Nebraska lawmakers are working on legislation this year that will legalize online casino and sports betting services, opening the door for full range gambling services such as responsible gambling protocols and giving the state lottery greater influence over this new market. Once approved by voters it could become the fifth state with legal online casino gambling; West Virginia lawmakers also recently proposed legislation legalizing sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS). With relatively low population numbers but relatively high revenue figures this state stands to become an attractive online betting market.
